How somatic therapy works to help manage OCD and anxiety

Anxiety and OCD don't just live in your thoughts—they live in your body too. That racing heart, tight chest, or restless urge to do something to feel okay again are all part of the picture, and true healing often means addressing both mind and body.

Somatic therapy incorporates body-based tools—like grounding techniques, breathwork, and nervous system regulation—to help you notice physical sensations of anxiety or compulsive urges without immediately reacting to them. This builds your capacity to sit with discomfort, creating space between what you feel and how you respond.

Used alongside approaches like CBT and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), somatic work can deepen and support your progress—helping you feel more grounded, regulated, and in control, both in and out of session.

An overview of somatic practices

> Body-centered approach — focuses on physical sensations, movement and nervous system regulation

> Grounding techniques — use the senses (touch, sight, sound) to bring attention back to the present moment

> Breath work — regulates the nervous system and shifts the body out of fight-or-flight

> Body scanning — builds awareness of where emotions or stress are held in the body

> Nervous system regulation — helps shift between states of stress (fight-or-flight) and calm (rest-and-digest)

> Mind-body awareness — creates space between a sensation and your reaction to it

You may benefit from a variety of somatic practices and they may support your body's ability to regulate and heal, including:
